The temperaments in education

The fundamental requirement of education is an understanding of the child, and a study of the temperaments wil contribute a great deal to that understanding. The necessary knowledge is not something wchich can be easily acquired from a few tests. It can only be gained by careful study, observation, and continual checking over a period of time.

What we call temperaments today were known in Greek times as the four humors, and medical science considered them of great importance. Knowledge of them seems to have fallen into the background until Dr Steiner called attention to their importance in education.

Temperament has nothing to do with character or morals, but is in itself a basic quality - a substance as it were, though not material. A person will do things or react in a certain way according to his tenmperament quite irrespective of his upbringing, education, standards, or knowledge.
